Maybe that Kohl & Campbell owned by a professional concert pianist will stand the best chance of being maintained in good condition, I don’t know.

Wishing you all the best in your piano search, and keep us informed! I think on average, an inspection is about $100 + or -, so, take a look first, and narrow down your list to maybe a couple of serious prospects. I'd also suggest having a qualified tech inspect the piano you are considering. And, while I'm on a roll here (not sure if it's a good roll or a bad roll ) but I'd only consider the Young Chang if your first impressions of them are great, which is possible. I'd also suggest taking a very close look at the Kawai and Yamaha, because they got their reputation the hard way. I say this because I've done it myself a few times.Īgain, just my opinion, but I think good quality pianos can last a very long time, if well cared for, and in some cases, under harsh conditions. I have read good reviews, mostly, of the Chinese made Ritmulers (sp?), so it might be a good prospect, as well as the K&C and the Knabe.Īlso, and, again, this is just my own personal opinion, I do happen to believe you can buy a decent, well sounding/playing, serviceable pre-owned grand piano for somewhere around $5K. I have never heard of a Kawai/Diapason, with both names on the fallboard, but I've learned that when it comes to pianos, there are always surprises by-the-way, I do not not think I'd want a Kawai/Diapason hybrid, but that is just me If I were looking for a used grand, and like the way it played and sounded, I might change my mind. I would not be afraid to take a look at either of the older (mid 1960s) Kawai or Yamaha. I have somewhat of a different opinion than some members here, regarding used pianos, and that is that condition trumps age, usually. I looked at all the used pianos you posted the ads for, and I'm thinking there are some good prospects among them, based on what you described as your wants, needs, and desires for a baby grand piano at this stage of your life.

I used to prefer heavy touch but I’d like to learn how to play with a lighter touch (both mine and the piano). So for now I want something that pulls me back to the reason I started playing to begin with: the sound of the acoustic, the feel of the keys.

I’d really like a grand with piano disc system that can record midi but it’s not justifiable since those systems cost a fortune and I’m not making money with the piano and don’t plan to. It’s recording function has stopped working. It’s Ab4 has a weird sound, which makes me cringe playing songs that use it heavily like Libestraum. I don’t enjoy it outside of “it has 88 keys and a decent touch.” I often improvise new-agey stuff on it but it just doesn’t capture my interest, find myself playing harmonica instead or guitar. I want to get rid of it for that reason alone. They love to mess with the buttons, which is aggravating to me. I have two kids, one is four the other almost 2. Has a soundboard even (though I realize that may be a gimmick). I have a Kawaii concert artist digital, which has a great sound, great speaker system. what are typical fees for a technician to come check out a piano? Will they do this for private sales?Īs for digitalis eroding my love for the instrument: market value aside, is a 5k grand worth the trouble to buy, move, etc.? Or is it important to move into a higher budget? how well do pianos at this end of the market hold value? I imagine rather well since they already aged off a bit of the market value and any subsequent loss will be very gradual. In about 15 years I might use it to teach after I retire from the corp world. I likely will not be recording, but a lofi session is not out of the question. My requirements are that it play well enough for a conservatory student to practice on, since that’s where I left off. For Kawai and Yamaha, these are older, for Young Chang, Ritmueller, and Knable, they seem newer. I’m in the area and looking at the used market, there are a number of parlor size grands available around 5k. House is 2500 square feet colonial, room is about 13x18. Hardwood floors though (with rugs), so I am a little concerned it will be loud. So I’m planning to fulfill a lifelong dream and put a grand piano in my living room. I’ve been limping along with digital for quite sometime and it has slowly eroded my love for the instrument.
